On Wednesday, March 24, 2010, The Ad Club will present their annual Women’s Leadership Forum, an afternoon of discussions with forward-thinking women from a variety of career paths and generations. These women will share some of the best advice they’ve been given, and will share some of their own advice to help other women turn their dreams into a reality. The event is designed specifically for the Senior, Junior, and Entry level Women in your company, as well as the men who want to see them succeed.

In addition, the event will also focus on the importance of mentoring, and each attendee is encouraged to bring along a “mentee”, or a young woman who he or she mentors. This would be a fantastic opportunity to recognize and reward the outstanding women in your camp who are doing a phenomenal job.

Going along with the theme, The Ad Club is compiling a book of advice and we want to include your thoughts! Submit “The Best Advice You Ever Got” to be featured in our take-away book which will be available to all event attendees.

Andrea J. Cabral was sworn in on November 29, 2002 as the 30th Sheriff in the history of Suffolk County. She is the first female in the Commonwealth’s history to hold the position. She was appointed to the position in 2002 by former Governor Jane Swift and elected to a full term in 2004. She brings an extensive legal background and a commitment to public safety to her position.

Sheriff Cabral is responsible for the operation of the House of Correction, the Suffolk County Jail and the Civil Process Division. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department is the largest sheriff’s department in the Commonwealth and the 30th largest in the United States. It has 1,051 employees, including executive managers, corrections officers, investigators, educators, health care providers, caseworkers and administrative staff, whose primary responsibility is to provide safe care, custody, control and rehabilitative support for more than 2,700 offenders daily. The average operating budget for the Department is $122 million.

Sheriff Cabral is a member of the Massachusetts Sheriffs’ Association. Following a two-year term as Vice President, she served as its President from 2008 – 2009.

Sheriff Cabral’s career in public service spans 23 years. Her legal career began in 1986 where she worked as a staff attorney in the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department at the Charles Street Jail, preparing and arguing motions for bail reduction in the Suffolk Superior Court. Subsequently, she served as an assistant district attorney in both the District and Superior Courts in the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office from 1987-1991.

From 1991-1993, Sheriff Cabral was an Assistant Attorney General in the Office of the Attorney General, where she worked in the Torts Division of the Government Bureau and the Civil Rights Division of the Public Protection Bureau. Sheriff Cabral then began work at the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office in 1993 under District Attorney Ralph C. Martin III. From 1993-1994, she was director of the Roxbury District Court Family Violence Project. As director, she prosecuted domestic violence cases (including the county’s first stalking case) and helped to establish new administrative policies and procedures for the processing of such cases in the Roxbury District Court. In March 1994, Sheriff Cabral became chief of the Domestic Violence Unit where she supervised and trained district and superior court staff in the preparation and prosecution of major domestic violence felony cases. Additionally, she indicted and prosecuted major domestic violence felony cases in Suffolk Superior Court. In 1998, Sheriff Cabral was promoted to chief of District Courts and Community Prosecutions. In this position, she effectively developed district court policies, staff supervision and evaluation tools, training curricula and case management practices in Suffolk County’s eight district courts and the Boston Municipal Court. Sheriff Cabral also oversaw the staffing and supervision of all district court community prosecutions programs, which included the Safe Neighborhood Initiatives and Prosecutor in Police Stations (PIPS) Programs.

Sheriff Cabral’s published works include Obtaining, Enforcing and Defending Ch.209A Restraining Orders in Massachusetts and co-authorship of the article Same Gender Domestic Violence: Strategies for Change in Creating Courtroom Accessibility. She is on the Boards of the Mass Mentoring Partnership and the Boston History and Innovation Collaborative and a regular contributor to legal forums sponsored by the American Bar Association, the Massachusetts Bar Association, Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education and the Boston Bar Association.

In addition to receiving numerous awards and honors throughout the years, in 2007, Sheriff Cabral was named an Eisenhower Fellow and traveled to Australia for a month-long study of their criminal justice system. Eisenhower Fellows are an international network of leaders from diverse backgrounds who create and share information and best practices within a vast array of professional disciplines.

Sheriff Cabral is a graduate of Boston College and Suffolk University Law School.

Shaunti Feldhahn is a popular public speaker, research analyst and best-selling author with 2 million copies of her books sold in 18 different languages. She holds a Master in Public Policy with a concentration in business from Harvard University, and worked on Wall Street as an analyst and on Capitol Hill before becoming a surprise bestselling author and relationship researcher. This wife of attorney-entrepreneur Jeff Feldhahn and mother of two, now applies her analytical skills to the startling research of what men privately think in the workplace but rarely share; perceptions that often fundamentally affect their female colleagues.

After launching her latest book, The Male Factor: The Unwritten Rules, Misperceptions and Secret Beliefs of Men in the Workplace, on The Today Show in January 2010, Shaunti is now speaking to corporate groups about her surprising findings. This knowledge has proven to be of great interest to talented, high-potential women in the workplace as well as to men who want to cultivate positive working relationships. Just as if they were doing business in a foreign culture, women find knowledge of the “internal” male culture immediately valuable in overcoming obstacles they may not have been aware of before, and having the greatest possible effectiveness and influence with male bosses, colleagues, subordinates or clients.

For more information on Shaunti’s research or to explore means for further application, visit www.HumanFactorResources.com.

Jean Junior graduated summa cum laude from Harvard University with an A.B. in sociology in 2009. She spent her undergraduate years engaging in social justice and global health work through organizations such as the Harvard College Global Health and AIDS Coalition. She was also deeply involved with CityStep, an amazingly fun undergraduate-run dance education program for public school students. During the summer after her sophomore year, Jean interned at iTEACH, an NGO based in South Africa, which works to save the lives of people with HIV and TB. While there, she designed a community-based study aimed at providing patients with sustainable vegetable gardens. She spent the following summer in Bangladesh doing rural health research and studying poverty alleviation strategies at BRAC (formerly, the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Corporation). As a senior, she wrote a thesis on the gendered experiences of African physician immigrants to the U.S. Since graduating, Jean has returned to South Africa as a Fulbright fellow to evaluate and improve iTEACH’s treatment program for end-stage AIDS patients. After her year in South Africa, she will spend two years at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar studying Comparative Social Policy. Then, she will return to the U.S. for medical school. In broad terms, her ultimate goal is to try her hardest to alleviate poverty, hunger, illness, and human suffering. Jean loves playing clarinet and “talking to people who want to make the world a better place.”

Best Advice:

“Therefore I shall devote myself, my time, my energy, my talents, to the service of South Africa. I shall no longer ask myself if this or that is expedient, but only if it is right. I shall do this not because I am noble or unselfish, but because life slips away and because I need for the rest of my journey a star that will not play false to me, a compass that will not lie. I shall do this, not because I am a negrophile and a hater of my own, but because I cannot find it in me to do anything else. I am lost when I balance this against that, I am lost when I ask if this is safe, I am lost when I ask if men, white men or black men, Englishmen or Afrikaners, Gentiles or Jews, will approve. Therefore I shall try to do what is right, and to speak what is true.

I do this not because I am courageous and honest but because it is the only way to end the conflict of my deepest soul. I do it because I am no longer able to aspire to the highest with one part of myself, and to deny it with another. I do not wish to live like that, I would rather die than live like that. I understand better those who have died for their convictions, and have not thought it was wonderful or brave or noble to die. They died rather than live, that was all. Yet it would not be honest to pretend that it is solely an inverted selfishness that moves move. I am moved by something that is not my own, that moves me to do what is right, at whatever cost it may be.” Cry, The Beloved Country, Alan Patan

On November 5th, 2009 Basketball Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman added a new piece of history to her already illustrious career when Donnie Nelson and Evan Wyly, co-owners of Frisco’s NBA Development League team, announced the hiring of Nancy to lead the Frisco, TX newest professional sports team. Nelson and Wyly have tapped Nancy as the franchise’s first head coach. Lieberman, widely considered one of the most influential figures in women’s basketball history, will become the first female head coach to lead an NBA or NBA D-League team. Nancy will begin coaching the Frisco, TX D-League team starting in 2010.

On July 24th , 2008 Nancy signed to play for the Detroit Shock of the WNBA. Thus becoming the oldest player to ever play in the history of the league at the young age of 50. This breaks the previous record of 39 years old which Nancy established as a member of the Phoenix Mercury in 1997. Her rise through the ranks of professional sports and her significant contributions to women’s basketball encompasses such a rich and elaborate history. Lieberman’s distinguished career is one of monumental strength and motivation in the pursuit of becoming the greatest women’s basketball player. Her refusal to accept anything less than the best, her devotion to the sport, her relentless time and energy to the advancement of women playing professional basketball are a source of inspiration. Her quest for excellence is brilliantly diversified as a Hall of Famer, two-time Olympian, three-time All-American, WNBA coach & GM, acclaimed broadcaster for ESPN/ABC/NBA TV, motivational speaker, and esteemed writer. Nancy Lieberman represents the epitome of triumph and serves as a true pioneer for women in sports.

Lieberman’s journey began on the rough and tumble asphalt courts of Harlem, which was no small departure from her native of Queens, New York. Lieberman quickly developed a reputation as a tough and gritty basketball powerhouse while attending Far Rockaway High School. In 1974, Lieberman’s talents were illuminated on the national spotlight after garnering one of 12 coveted spots on the USA’s National Team, and a year later managed to bring home a gold and silver medal at both the World Championships and Pan American Games respectively. Prior to enrolling at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia on a full athletic scholarship, Lieberman set another landmark by becoming the youngest basketball player in Olympic History (male or female) at 18 years old, and earned a silver medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.

Lieberman exploded onto the college scene and would ultimately drive the Lady Monarchs to two consecutive National Championships, a WNIT Championship, and leave a lasting impact that would be near impossible to replicate. Lieberman became the first ever two-time winner of the prestigious Wade Trophy, which recognizes the “Player of the Year” in women’s college basketball. Lieberman was selected as the Broderick Award winner for basketball as the top women’s player in America, as well as received three consecutive Kodak All-American honors during her collegiate career, making her one of the most decorated female athletes in the United States.

Lieberman went on to shape the landscape and future of women’s professional basketball as player, coach and renowned analyst. Beginning her professional career with the Dallas Diamonds of the Women’s Basketball League in 1981, she quickly led her team in 1984 to the WABA Championship, while also capturing the title of league MVP. More remarkably, Lieberman is recognized as the only woman to play in an all-male league, the United States Basketball League with the Springfield Fame (1986), and Long Island Knights (1987). In 1988, Lieberman toured the world with the acclaimed Harlem Globetrotters as a member of the Washington Generals. In 1997 Lieberman came out of retirement and was drafted by the Phoenix Mercury during the inaugural season of the WNBA. During her time as a professional player, Lieberman hit several milestones including an induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a player in 1996 and in 1999 was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame as well as the NYC Basketball Hall of Fame and the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.

After playing in the WNBA, Lieberman was named General Manager and Head Coach of the WNBA’s Detroit Shock in 1998, where she helmed the team to the highest winning percentage of any expansion team in professional sports and was runner up for coach of the year. Lieberman served as president of the Women’s Sports Foundation for two years. Thereafter, she was named head coach of the Dallas Fury of the NWBL in 2004 where she guided the team to a championship title and runner up in 2005.

Lieberman’s career progressed from playing and coaching and into national commentating, motivational speaking engagements and philanthropic endeavors. Lieberman currently serves as a full-time analyst with ESPN for men’s and women’s college basketball, as well as women’s (WNBA). In addition to ESPN, Lieberman has lent her commentary to NBA-TV as a studio analyst, and writing talents to ABC, NBC, the NFL Network, the Dallas Morning News, the New York Times and USA Today. Lieberman is an accomplished author, having penned an autobiography entitled Lady Magic and Basketball for Women, and several “how-to” videos providing instruction and advice to aspiring basketball players.

Throughout her entire career Lieberman’s progress as a successful athlete and leader was based on her boldness and ability to take positive action. She is an influential communicator and has a passion for educating athletes and business leaders to improve efficiency and attain peak performance. Lieberman’s in depth industry experience is unparalleled and it is for this reason that Lieberman is recognized as a prolific motivational speaker for Fortune 500 companies. Nancy travels around the country to conduct speaking engagements for private and public corporations, non-for profit organizations and basketball camps. She speaks on a myriad of topics such as Business and sports, Image and Self Esteem, Teamwork, Winning, Working, and Parenting.

Guiding youngsters and helping the disadvantaged has always been a passion for Lieberman and is reflected in her active involvement with the Special Olympics, the Jimmy V. Foundation (named for the late Jim Valvano), the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, and recently her work with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Lone Star Chapter. Lieberman hosts and coach’s basketball clinics and camps for girls and boys in Dallas, Detroit and Phoenix, hoping that through positive guidance and helpful instruction, can help facilitate the next generation of student athletes to success.

Lieberman’s career is a colorful one and her impact on women’s basketball and professional sport is impressive. It is only fitting that awards are given in her honor, such as the Nancy Lieberman Award, which is bestowed upon the most outstanding female point guard in NCAA Division I Basketball, and have adorned the likes of Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Temeka Johnson, Ivory Latta, and Lindsey Harding. Nancy Lieberman’s legacy as a mom, basketball player, Hall of Famer, coach & GM, Olympian, writer, broadcaster, and motivator will forever endure.
